Temporary device sharing
iPhone → PC, in seconds
Send text & files without sending them to yourself.
Create a private handoff. Scan the code with your phone to instantly transfer text, photos, and files.
By starting a handoff, you agree to our Terms and Privacy Policy.
Files and text are end-to-end encrypted and auto-delete within minutes.
How it works
- Open handoffdrop.app on your computer. A QR code appears right away.
- Scan it with your phone’s camera. The session opens in your phone’s browser. No app, no account.
- Send photos, videos, files or text either way. They show up on the other device right away.
Pairing two phones, like an iPhone and an Android? Open handoffdrop.app on both and scan one phone’s QR code with the other.
What you get
- Works across platforms: iPhone, Android, Windows, Mac, Linux and Chromebook, in any modern browser. Computer to computer works too.
- No shared Wi-Fi needed: your phone can be on 5G while your computer is on another network.
- Files up to 1.5 GB each, including 4K video. iPhone HEIC photos are converted to JPG so they open on Windows.
- End-to-end encrypted: text and files are encrypted in your browser with AES-256-GCM. The key travels only inside the QR link and never reaches our servers.
- Nothing lingers: files are deleted after 15 minutes and text after 60 seconds. Ending a handoff deletes everything right away.
- Free and open source: no sign-up, no subscription. The code is on GitHub under the AGPL.
- Optional shortcuts: an iOS Share Sheet shortcut, Android’s share menu (once Handoff is added to your home screen), and a Chrome and Edge extension.
Questions
Is Handoff free?
Yes. There’s no account, subscription or paywall. Each file can be up to 1.5 GB.
Do I need to install an app?
No. Both devices only need a web browser. The iOS shortcut and the browser extension are optional extras.
Do both devices need to be on the same Wi-Fi?
No. Any internet connection works on either device, including mobile data.
Can Handoff see my files?
No. Files and text sent from the app are encrypted on your device before upload, and the key never leaves the QR link. Files shared through the iOS Shortcut are the exception: they’re uploaded before pairing, so they aren’t end-to-end encrypted.
How long are files kept?
Files are deleted automatically after 15 minutes and shared text after 60 seconds. Ending the handoff deletes everything right away.
How is it different from AirDrop?
AirDrop only works between Apple devices that are near each other. Handoff works between any phone and any computer, over any network, without installing anything.
